European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth
Maria Gabriel is European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth since 2019. She is working to ensure a speedy agreement on the future Horizon Europe program and its full implementation.
Her team works to provide investment flows for revolutionary research and cutting-edge innovation, including within the European Innovation Council. The Commissioner’s team works to develop the European Research Area in cooperation with the Member States. The main objectives are to ensure complementarity between research, policy and economic priorities. The Commissioner’s team is leading the Commission’s work on creating a European Education Area by 2025.
Since 2019, she is the first vice-president of the European People’s Party (EPP). From 2017 to 2019, she is European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Digital Society. . She is Vice-Chair of the EPP Group in the European Parliament from 2014 to 2017. In the period 2009 – 2017 she is a Member of the European Parliament, EPP / GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria).
