Zhecho Stankov currently serves as Minister of Energy in the government of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. He is a recognised expert in energy policy and infrastructure development, with extensive experience in advancing strategic energy projects at both national and regional level.
A graduate in Economics from the University of Regensburg, Germany, Mr Stankov has led key initiatives in energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and market liberalisation. His career spans across the public and corporate sectors, including a leadership role as Chair of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), where he was instrumental in fostering regional cooperation and enhancing Bulgaria’s energy security architecture.
Between 2015 and 2021, he served as Deputy Minister of Energy, overseeing major infrastructure programmes, EU-funded energy projects, and intergovernmental energy partnerships. During this time, Bulgaria made significant progress in diversifying energy sources and strengthening its role within the European energy market.
Elected as a Member of Parliament in 2021, he represents the Burgas region and is an active member of the Budget and Finance Committee in the 51st National Assembly, where he contributes to shaping long-term strategies for financial stability and energy transformation.
Minister Stankov is widely acknowledged for his pragmatic, forward-thinking approach and his commitment to building a resilient, secure, and sustainable energy system in Bulgaria and across the region.
