Dr. Stelian Dimitrov is an associate professor at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, where he is Head of the Department of Geospatial Systems and Technologies, as well as Director of the National Centre for Geospatial Research and Technologies.
He received his education in the field of geography at “St. Kliment Ohridski” University in Sofia as well as at the University of Oxford, UK (OSI/Chevening scholarship). In 2007 he was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship and conducted research and taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA. The same year he was a guest lecturer at the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (USA) in the Occasional Lecturer Program.
In 2020, he founded the undergraduate degree program Geospatial Systems and Technologies at
Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. In 2023 he became the initiator and founder of the
undergraduate program Climate change and management, which is in English and the first in the
field of climate change and adaptation in Bulgaria.
The scientific and professional interests of Dr. Dimitrov are in the field of application of geoinformation technologies in planning and management of territorial systems and the environment. He has considerable research and practical experience in the field of studying the effects of climate change on the urban environment and its adaptation. He has been involved in the development of a number of strategic and planning documents at all territorial levels in Bulgaria , and since 2012 has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Sustainable Urban Development Fund.
