Prof. Dr. Valentina Todorova is a distinguished scientist in marine biology and ecology with over 30 years of experience at the Institute of Oceanology – BAS. Born in Varna, she graduated from the First Language High School (English) and pursued her studies in “Hydrobiology” at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
In December 2024, she was appointed as the director of the institute following a competition held by the Governing Council of BAS . Previously, she held various leadership positions, including deputy director, chair of the scientific council, and head of the “Marine Biology and Ecology” department .
Her scientific specialization encompasses biodiversity, ecology, and conservation of benthic fauna and seabed habitats in the Black Sea. She is the author and co-author of over 100 scientific and technical publications and reports. Prof. Todorova is a member of European, regional, and national expert and advisory groups focused on marine ecology .
As director, Prof. Todorova emphasizes:
Advancement of research activities in the institute’s priority areas.
Active participation in the educational process and training of young specialists.
Fulfillment of national commitments for marine environment monitoring in accordance with EU directives.
Support to state institutions through expert analyses and developments in marine environmental matters.
Development and maintenance of research infrastructure and information databases.
Her specific goals include attracting young scientists, constructing a new research vessel, and modernizing existing infrastructure, including the base in Shkorpilovtsi .
