Munir Hassan is a Partner at CMS, the global law firm, where he serves as Global Head of the Energy & Climate Change Group. He has worked at CMS since 1997 and was appointed Head of the Energy Sector Group in June 2019, having played an integral role in the origin and growth of the firm's clean energy practice, which became the largest in Europe. He holds an LLB (Hons) in Law from the University of Nottingham.
His group is a global market leader in specialist legal advice on energy matters, particularly in the power and renewables sectors, advising on a vast portfolio of low carbon projects and transactions across all technologies — including offshore wind, onshore wind, solar and biomass — and across legal disciplines from M&A and financings through to consenting, real estate, commercial and regulatory issues and disputes. The group also helps carve a path forward for technologies accelerating the energy transition, from carbon capture and storage to small modular nuclear reactors.
Hassan was instrumental in the firm winning the mandate to advise COP28 pro bono, and is currently involved in many of the UK's most significant offshore wind projects. He is recognised as highly sought after, with peers praising his outstanding knowledge of both the electricity and renewable energy sectors. He is the editor of several leading industry publications, including "Wind: Projects & Transactions" and "Power: A Practical Guide," and serves as Chair of the Energy Committee of the City of London Law Society.
