Metodi Metodiev holds a Master's degree in International Finance from the University of St
Andrews, Scotland. He specializes in public financial management, the deepening of the
Economic and Monetary Union, and the European framework for economic and fiscal
governance. He has completed professional qualifications and training programmes in the
United States, Austria and Belgium.
His professional career began in the non-governmental sector before joining the Ministry of
Finance in 2010, where he held various expert and managerial positions. Between 2015 and
2018, he served as Head of the ECOFIN Sector at the Permanent Representation of the
Republic of Bulgaria to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. In this role, he was
responsible for a broad range of dossiers under the ECOFIN Council as well as the
negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021–2027 and files related to the
mandates of the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and
Development, macro-financial assistance to third countries, the deepening of the EMU,
InvestEU, and others.
Since September 2018, he has served as Director of the Economic and Financial Policy
Directorate at the Ministry of Finance. He was subsequently appointed as a Deputy Minister
of Finance with responsibilities covering EU affairs, international financial institutions,
financial markets regulation, the National Fund, and state debt management, including
strategic responsibilities related to Bulgaria’s preparation for joining the euro area.
