Krasimir Valchev

Krasimir Valchev is a Bulgarian finance expert, policymaker and seasoned public official with extensive experience in managing and reforming the education sector. Since 16 January 2025, he has served as Minister of Education and Science in the government led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. He previously held the same position between 2017 and 2021 in the third cabinet of Boyko Borissov.
Born on 9 June 1975 in Sofia and raised in the village of Aprilovo, Valchev graduated with a degree in Public Finance from the University of Economics in Varna. He further specialised in Budget and Financial Management at Duke University, USA.
His career began at the Ministry of Finance, where he gained deep expertise in budget planning, public spending, and the evaluation of sectoral policies. Between 2009 and 2017, he served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Science, with a brief tenure as Director of Budget and Finance at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his roles as both Secretary General and later as Minister, Valchev was responsible for the strategic planning, administration, and budgetary oversight of Bulgaria’s education system. He led reforms aimed at modernising the sector, improving the allocation of resources, fostering digital transformation, and enhancing the alignment between education and the labour market.
Between his two ministerial terms, he served as a Member of Parliament across seven consecutive legislatures, actively contributing to legislation in the areas of education, science, and public finance.
