His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr Nathaniel Copsey, was appointed in March 2024 and officially took up his post in October 2024. Prior to his appointment in Sofia, Mr Copsey served as Chief Speechwriter to the Foreign Secretary, covering the full spectrum of the United Kingdom’s foreign policy priorities. A large part of his professional career has been dedicated to European affairs, with a particular focus on the European Union and Eastern Europe. He joined the UK Government in 2015 to work on European Union matters, contributing to the UK’s EU renegotiation efforts in 2015 and the national referendum in 2016. He later played an active role in the Brexit process and led key policy work on Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Before entering diplomatic service, Mr Copsey had an extensive academic background, most recently holding the title of Professor of Politics. He is a recognised expert in European institutions and international political dynamics. As Ambassador, Mr Copsey represents His Majesty The King and the UK Government in the Republic of Bulgaria. He leads the work of the British Embassy in Sofia across a wide portfolio, including bilateral political relations, trade and investment, culture and media relations, and consular and visa services.
