Apostolos Tzitzikostas serves as the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, a role in which he shapes EU policy across sustainable mobility, the green transition in transportation, and tourism as a driver of economic growth and regional development. With extensive experience in European and regional governance, he previously served as Governor of Central Macedonia, where he led initiatives on regional infrastructure and economic development. Throughout his career, he has been a strong advocate for green technologies and sustainable growth across both the transport and tourism sectors.
As Commissioner, his overarching mission is to make European transport more competitive, sustainable, and resilient to future shocks, while ensuring it remains safe, accessible, and affordable for all EU citizens. On the infrastructure side, he is tasked with ensuring that the missing Trans-European Transport corridor segments are completed by 2030 and with strengthening the single market for transport services. He is also responsible for advancing an ambitious European high-speed rail network to better connect EU capitals, and for developing a Single Digital Booking and Ticketing Regulation that would allow passengers to purchase a single ticket through a single platform while safeguarding their rights.
Beyond connectivity, Tzitzikostas is focused on decarbonisation and investment, leading the development of a Sustainable Transport Investment Plan to scale up funding for initiatives such as road transport electrification and cutting-edge technologies. He is equally committed to promoting a resilient and competitive tourism sector in line with the EU Agenda for Tourism 2030. His portfolio also extends to sector-specific strategies, including a new industrial maritime strategy and a dedicated EU ports strategy centred on security and competitiveness.
