Mechthild Wörsdörfer is a distinguished German economist and a leading voice in shaping Europe’s energy transition. Since 2021, she has served as Deputy Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER), playing a pivotal role in delivering the EU Green Deal, implementing REPowerEU, and advancing Europe's path toward climate neutrality. Her impressive career within the European institutions spans over two decades, including top-level responsibilities in energy policy, innovation, and SME competitiveness. She previously held the roles of Director for Energy Policy and Director for Renewables, Research & Innovation, and Energy Efficiency within DG ENER, and led units covering electricity and gas markets, industry policy, and entrepreneurship. From 2018 to 2021, she was Director of Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks at the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, where she guided strategic insights on global energy systems and technological transformation. She holds a Master’s degree in European Economics from the Free University of Brussels, as well as economics and language studies from the University of Montpellier and the University of Heidelberg. She is fluent in German, English, French, and Spanish. Mechthild Wörsdörfer is widely respected for her strategic vision and leadership in driving a sustainable, secure, and competitive energy system in Europe and beyond.
