Irena Georgieva is the Chief Executive Officer of Bulgarian Water and Sewerage Holding EAD, a state-owned enterprise responsible for coordinating and investing in the water supply and sewerage sector in Bulgaria.
Irena Georgieva holds a law degree and a PhD in law. Before taking the helm of the Water Holding, she worked in the field of public procurement and served as an advisor to the former head of the holding, Eng. Iliyan Iliev. She was appointed CEO during the tenure of the GERB party.
Role in the Water Supply and Sewerage Sector
Under her leadership, Bulgarian Water and Sewerage Holding EAD actively participates in modernizing the water supply and sewerage infrastructure across the country. As of 2024, the holding manages 19 investment loans totaling BGN 123 million, funding the construction of 125 km of water pipelines and 5 km of sewer systems.
Additionally, Georgieva emphasizes that over BGN 15 billion are needed to upgrade the infrastructure, with outdated systems being the primary cause of water losses. She also urges municipalities to actively engage in the modernization process by applying for various funding programs.

In the context of the European Green Deal, Irena Georgieva plays a pivotal role in implementing policies aimed at reducing water losses and enhancing the efficiency of water supply systems. Bulgarian Water and Sewerage Holding EAD's involvement in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan provides opportunities for additional investments in this sector.
